Remnants of Mixed Minded

I just had an amazing weekend, taking three consecutive workshops with Donna Downey , at Mixed Minded, organized by Karen Ellis of The Art House Studio in Kitchener, Ontario.  Here are the remnants of my weekend:

We worked in two journals, and made a canvas.  But, most of all, I met some amazing women.  This was the first time I had participated in a weekend of arting.  So rejuvinating.

Inspiration Donna + Video!

My Inspiration Donna Video is up!  Woo hoo!  lol

I had so much fun making this spread, and video.  Donna Downey’s Inspiration Wednesday video (upon which my spread and video is based) is here.  Her spread is gorgeous!  Mine is much different, even though we used similar products and techniques.

Donna Downey, You Inspire Me

I am so inspired by Donna Downey.  Her Inspiration Wednesdays are so much fun to watch!  I look forward to them every week.  Every week, while watching her videos, I want to go make a journal spread, using the same products, or the same techniques, or whatever inspires me on any given Wednesday.  This week, I was so inspired, that I not only made a journal spread based on her video, but I made a video based on her video!  :)   It is uploading to Youtube right now, so I will be sharing it later.

Thank you, Donna!  :)   While you’re waiting for my video to upload, check out Donna’s video here.  Then, come back here later to see mine!  :)   Even though I used similar products and techniques, our pages are quite different!

Oh My…I Have a Lot of Journals lol

So, just out of curiosity, I decided to see exactly how many journals I have on the go right now.  I like to work in several journals at one time, but I think I’ve gotten a little out of control as of late.  You be the judge:

I really do enjoy art journaling!  ;)   Taking these photos lead me to blog about the various journals that I enjoy working in.

First, my Smash journals.  I seem to fill these quickly, just because most of the work is already done for you.  All I generally do is slap in some ephemera, add a little washi tape, and I’m done!  I’m in the process of making a Youtube video flip of my beloved Smash journals.

As you can see, one of them is full, and the other two are move than half full.  :)

Next, premade journals.  There are so many options out there!  When I began art journaling, I was a little overwhelmed by all the options.  Over time, I have played with a number of different journals, and, depending on the type of journaling I do, they all seem to have their purpose.

For journaling using wet mediums (acrylic paint, sprays, watercolor crayons, inktense pencils, etc.), my absolute favourite is my watercolor Moleskines.  They come in several different sizes.  Of course, I have them all lol.  The biggest one is HUGE…12″ x 16″!  The smallest one isn’t in the photo…it’s about 3″ x 5″?  I also like the one with the purple label.  The paper is thick, but not watercolor.  It is a nice off-white color, and will hold up to a fair bit of wet mediums.

My next favorite pre-made journals are the Strathmore mixed media journals, and the Strathmore Visual Journals (140 lb watercolor).  Strathmore really has done a fabulous job…the paper is nice and thick, and holds a TON of watercolor-type mediums!  The only thing I am not crazy about is the spiral binding, but I’ve learned to work with it.  The Robert Bateman Sketchbook is good for dry medium, and will also hold up to a fair amount of wet stuff.

Next, handmade journals.  I should give a little shout-out to Julie Prichard.  She introduced me to journal making.  Her online courses, offered at The Land of Lost Luggage Ning site, are awesome.  I made three journals in one of her classes.  I also made Teesha Moore’s famous 16 page journal,(see her Youtube videos – the first one is below) and the fabric quilted one at the back is based on one of Teesha’s journals.

Last, but certainly not least, are my Letter Love journals, made while participating in Joanne Sharpe’s Letter Love classes.  She has a new class starting soon, and I can’t wait!

Sooooo…..there you have it.  (Almost) All of my current journals.  My name is Kim…lol

Thanks for stopping by!  If you have any questions about art journals, please feel free to ask.  If I don’t know the answer, I will find it for you!  Cuz that’s just how much of an enabler…er….friend I am! ;)

<3 My Smash Books!

My second Youtube video.  Just a flip through three of my (almost full) Smash books.  If you enjoy, please “like” my video!  :)

Monkey See

I have wanted to make a sock monkey for years! Lol! My sister has a childhood story around a sock monkey, so I decided I would make her a sock monkey for her 50th birthday. He he…better late than never!

So, here is my purple sock monkey….purple being my sister’s favorite color.

Isn’t he cuuuuuuute? I think so.  I hope my sister likes it, and that she doesn’t read my blog!  ;)

29 Faces in May

I’ve seen the posts for 29 Faces in May all over — Tam recently posted an in-progress video, Gulfsprite’s posting a photo of each day’s faceSami Kira Harding is participating, and others are showing them on Instagram and Twitter.  I learned to draw faces a couple of years ago, by taking Tam’s Fabulous Faces course.  I practiced a lot, and got pretty good at it!  But, I strayed away from drawing, and started painting and art journaling.  So, I figured this challenge would be pretty easy.  *NOT*  I cannot believe how bad I am now!  LOL!  I wasn’t going to bother posting any of my *really bad* faces, but I decided that i would be brave, and post them anyway.  I have nowhere to go but up, at this point!  Actually, yesterday’s face is better….so, I seem to be improving.  So, *gulp*….

I’m starting with the best of the bad…  The eyes are a bit far apart, but it has potential!  I sketched it in my Strathmore Mixed Media journal, after figuring out that my Robert Bateman mixed media journal was not the best journal for wet media.  I’m hoping she will be pretty once I add hair and color.

This one was my first one.  I don’t mind the background, but the face is not great.  Definitely room for improvement.

This next one is hilarious!  I did her in my itty bitty Strathmore Visual Journal.  I love the paper in this journal, but I definitely don’t enjoy working that small.  See…i told you I was going to be brave.

I decided that I would count this one as a “face”, even though it’s a stamped image.  I did color it, right?  *lol*  I know…but it’s my blog, and my own personal challenge, so if I want to count a stamped image that I only colored, I am going to count a stamped image that I colored!  ;)   After all, I made a VIDEO out of it!  :0)

I didn’t even finish this one.  First, I didn’t really like the sketch.  Then, when I tried to rescue it with paint, the paper started to disintegrate.  I may or may not go back to it.

Another unfinished…it’s also in my Robert Bateman sketchbook, so I don’t think I’ll try to paint it, but I may try to finish it as a graphite sketch.  The eyes are too close together, and I’m not loving the lips….

There you go!  The good, the bad, and the ugly!  Six faces on day 10…23 faces to go….

Art Journaling Video!

LIFE IS GOOD!  :)

So, I have spent the last few days filming and editing my first Youtube video.  I’ve learned many things…one of those things is that I sure appreciate those of you who do these videos on a regular basis!  I also need a new computer.  ;)

So, here is the art journal page I ended up with.  Totally random.  I just turned on the video camera, and started playing with my supplies.  Lots of layers, and lots of fun!

Some details:

And….here’s my video!

My next one will be better.  ;)   But, I am not unhappy with this one.  If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask!  :)

I’m in!  Are you?  Click here for details.

Letter Loved

Our last big project for Joanne Sharpe’s Letter Love course was to make a “Letter Loved” journal with pre-inked and sprayed pages.  I started with random sizes of watercolor paper, and sprayed and inked them with my stencils.  Messy, but oh, so much fun!  While I was at it, I also inked up a large piece of canvas, with the intent of using it for the cover of my journal somehow.  Joanne taught us how to make a simple journal without stitching, held together with tape.  I took her concept, and kicked it up a notch, using my bookbinding skills and supplies.

So, here is what I started with…lots of inky goodness!  I have a pretty extensive collection of stencils!  I used various spray inks, including Radiant Rain, my newest addition to my collection.

Next, a few cuts, a little glue, and lots of tape later…

What do you think?  I love it!  Can you tell which stencil is my current fave?  Thank you so much for stopping by!  :)
