2014 – The Good, the Bad, and the Sad

selfiedec14_edited-1I know I haven’t blogged much lately, but I do plan to change that!  2014 was VERY difficult for me.  I am so very hopeful that 2015 will be a much better year.

I did have a nice, quiet Christmas, spent with hubby, kitties, and hubby’s family.  Santasteve was VERY good to me.  I am one grateful girl.

Even though we – 1.  took our dream vacation (a whole month in Australia!), and – 2.  built a new BEAUTIFUL home, 🙂 – I also suffered a serious back injury, in May.  And I lost some very special people. 😦  As a result of my injury, I lost an entire summer season of tennis.  That is the first time that has happened in about 25 years.  Not only is my tennis fantastic exercise, it is also my primary social outlet.  I am also unable to exercise, and that depresses me even more.  Secondly, as a result of our move, I wasn’t able to do much art.  These are the two things that keep me grounded, and help me deal with the stress of life.  I’m still not recovered from my back injury, unfortunately, but after months of waiting, I finally have an appointment at the local Pain Clinic on February 6, so I am hopeful that I can find a drug-free method of pain management (at the very least).  I lost my Mom, unexpectedly, in November, and I am still so sad about that. RIP Mom.  😦

BUT, my art studio is now complete!  I am so excited, and grateful to my fabulous husband.  I now have the most awesome space in which to create!  I still need to do some organizing, but I am working slowly on that.  🙂

Here is what it looked like on December 3 – sorry the photos aren’t the best quality, but you get the general idea.  It’s changed a LOT since then.  When it’s “finished” (will it ever be?) – I’ll post updated pictures.  It’s a HUGE room in the basement, with large windows, and tons of storage, horizontal workspaces, excellent lighting, and a cork floor!  I have been creative most of my life, so I have managed to accumulate quite the collection of supplies.

And, the centre island worktable is installed!  This is the only picture I have taken so far.  Wilson likes it.  😉

This blog post has taken way longer than I had anticipated.  But, I hope you enjoyed taking a peek into my life.  Thank you so much for stopping by.  I have another post almost ready to post – I will be talking about the online classes I plan to take for 2015.  Since I can’t play tennis, and I have this awesome art studio, I REALLY want to do tons and tons of art!  So, check back tomorrow….ta ta for now!  🙂

Did You Miss Me?

WordPress just reminded me that I haven’t blogged in a while.  lol.  At least somebody missed me!  😉

It’s December 28, 2014, and I am reflective today.  2014 has been an eventful year, to say the least.  When I started this post, I was going to write about my year, but, frankly, the photos tell the story way better than I could.  So, for your viewing pleasure…here is my 2014 in pictures.

Hello, My Name is Kim and I’m a Frolicaholic

Hello my friends!  I’m really trying to get back into the habit of blogging again.  I read on someone else’s blog, that it seems almost redundant any more because of all the social media sites out there.  But, I’m not a big Twitter or Instagram fan, so I still prefer to read blogs.  So, here I am.

First, some cuteness from my kitties:2014-06-14 01.53 summer WilsonAren’t they adorable when they’re sleeping?  Yah.  Not so much when they are tearing through my house and knocking beautiful glass vases off of tables.  lol

I’m participating in Jane Davenport’s “Frolicaholic” class right now.  The timing is good for me, because my mojo left me recently, and I’ve been in a bit of a funk because of that.  But, Jane to the rescue again!  All I have to do is watch one of Jane’s videos, and I am immediately inspired to get out my art supplies.  So, here is the cover of my journal, and the first couple of pages.cover

Bokeh Effect With a Point and Shoot Camera

Hello my friends!  I have been working on my December “Daily” album, and after doing some research, I figured out a way to get a bokeh effect photo with my Canon Point and Shoot.  I have the Power Shot SD1300 IS.  If you don’t know what a bokeh effect is, here is what mine looks like:

bokeh

Bokeh is Japanese in origin and refers to blur or a blurry quality, and in photography it is a very recognizable technique.  The above photo is taken straight from my camera, with no manipulation at all.  How did I do it?  It’s simple, really.  First, I set my camera to macro setting (usually a little flower icon in your camera settings).  Then, I put my hand in front of the camera, and pressed the shutter button down part way to “register” my hand, then I quickly pulled my hand away and took the photo of my Christmas tree.  I had to be quick, or the camera would re-focus on the tree.  So, after a few tries, I got the effect I was after.

I wanted the lights to appear as larger circles, so I edited it with Photoshop Elements by cropping a portion of the photo and then resizing it to 4″x6″ to get this:

Fun, right?  🙂  I think so!  playSo, before I leave you to get back to my happy place, I thought I’d share a photo of my studio table.  It is such a mess!  Before I do anything else, I have to do some tidying up….it gets to a point where I am no longer inspired or productive.my desk dec19

*Art* Journal – Documenting December

So, I decided to do a “December Daily” of sorts this year.  This project has taken me back to my scrapbooking days.  But, I do plan to try to incorporate some art journaling pages as well.  I find the scrappy-style to be so quick and easy, and I’ve had limited time up to this point, so it’s been working for me.  I don’t want to stress about it, so I’m just playing with my Christmas products whenever I have time.  It’s forced me to take some pictures, which is something I haven’t really done much of, other than while on vacation.  We don’t have children, so I have to get creative.  My furbabies have been my main subject so far lol.  So, here’s where I am to date:

Missing Nac

Hello, my friends.  I don’t share much personal stuff on this blog, but I lost my dear baby sister 3 years ago today, and I’m feeling a bit sad.  Even though I know she is in a better place now, I still miss her terribly.

This picture was taken in happier times – Christmas, 2006.
